Mastering Linkbait in Two Weeks: An Intern’s Story

My name is Ed Fry and I’ve been undertaking an internship here at Distilled researching and writing up a guide on linkbait. I pitched the idea to Will and Duncan back in June, keen to come back to the London office after an awesome two week internship last summer.

Several video interviews, hours of editing, a bunch of visual work and about 17,500 words later here it is: the SEO Guide to Creating Viral Linkbait and Infographics.

Read our linkbait guide

We’ve also got a Q&A webinar with the chance to get your linkbait questions answered by our SEO consultants if you’re still stuck! Details are in the guide. I hope you get as much benefit from using it as I did writing it.

A few really quick take-aways:

Success is in the process

Whether you’re a freelancer or working at an agency, getting the process right is critical to getting your linkbait bang on. I made a printable PDF workbook to use when going through the guide. You can download it at the top of the guide.

You can never do too much outreach

Hustle is the name of the game. If you get to the point of launching something, the amount of outreach depends entirely on how hard and smart you hustle for links. Who have you contacted? Are you definitely getting a link? How can you grow this relationship? Again, I’ve got some tutorials and checklists in there to help with the linkerati prospecting process.

You can do it!

If I can do it, you can. The reality is, besides being talked through the process (a back of napkin-style sketch) by Mark on the first day, it was up to me to make it happen. Everything from working with the design team, organising, filming and editing interviews with about a dozen people and fixing the formatting errors brewed by a mixture of Wordpress and my silly mistakes was down to me. It wasn’t a glorified baby-sitting process.

You’ve got no excuse. Go ship.

It’s just hard work. The guide took two week of researching and writing then about a week of editing. But now, already knowing the process I reckon I could do it in less. Like you practice a sport, playing music or even making money, you can practice creating awesome linkbait.

You’ve just got to start.

  2. I hear a lot about link bait but I don't quite get how I can use it. I understand if you have something wonderful to give away that everyone will want, like a free software program. My blogs are mostly about unsexy health complaints like tinnitus and hemorrhoids! Most people don't even want to admit they have these problems, so it's not like they'll be telling all their friends about my free report on hemorrhoids - LOL!
